The main opposition, Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has accused some senior officials of the Liberia National Police for their alleged involvement in armed robbery activities in Monrovia and its environs. The CDC said it is worrisome for the Police that is supposed to be the people’s protector to be involved in committing the act of armed robbery, thus pointing fingers at some top Police officers.
Addressing a team of journalists at the headquarters of the Congress for Democratic Change, the party’s Youth League Chairman, Jefferson Koijee pointed out that his party got intelligence that the head of the Anti-Robbery Unit, Johnny Diggs otherwise known as R4, Morris Dennis, AKA R5 and Jersey Harris otherwise known as 105 are allegedly linked to the facilitation of armed robbery. The Anti-Robbery Unit was founded by the former Deputy Police Director for Operations Abe Kromah to fight armed robbers at the time that was on the increase.
The special squad was formed out of a number of units within the LNP to include the Emergency Response Unit or ERU, Police Support Unit or PSU to battle armed robbers. According to the CDC official some alleged armed robbers behind bars at the LNP headquarters told the CDC that they (armed robbers) are normally joined by the head of the Anti-Robbery Unit to commit the act against the citizens.
Koijee explained that the fundamental focus of any responsible government is to provide protection of its citizens, saying if the Police can get involved in the act against its own citizens it is scaring in the absence of UNMIL.
“We have realized that the cases of armed robbery it is not just criminals getting involved, I think the Police are getting involved and becoming prime suspects as well as sponsors of armed robbery in our country, and as political leaders of this country we must speak when necessary,” he noted. Koijee however noted that the CDC is prepared to name and shame all those who he says are involved in the act, saying the CDC will also engage the President and the international community on the act.
“Those specific individuals that are involved in this armed robbery of Sam Gibson have been arrested and thrown behind bars, our disappointment is that those arrested have revealed to us that some top Police officers including R4, R5, 105 and one Johnny Diggs are involved in the act. These guys must come to the public glare,” he said.
Police spokesman Sam Collins could not be reached up to press time as his phone rang endlessly without response, but the Deputy Police Director for Operations Col. Prince Mulbah told FrontPageAfrica the incident is currently undergoing investigation and called on the public to give the Police what he termed briefing space
Recently, the Liberia National Police (LNP) Spokesman Collins disclosed that the LNP over the last two weeks arrested several hard-core armed robbers in Monrovia and other parts of the country. He identified two notorious criminals arrested during the operation as James Logan, AKA Survivor Drag and James Harries, AKA CEO. He said the arrest of the armed robbers was part of the Police operations geared towards clearing various communities of armed robbers.
Speaking to FPA via mobile Thursday evening the Deputy Police Director for Operations said all that the CDC is saying are rumors. He however confirmed that there were some arrest of armed robbers made by the Police naming the same two robbers Collins mentioned recently. “When the investigation is completed we will get the information to the public through the media”, Col. Mulbah said.
FPA has learned that the two criminals, James Logan, AKA Survivor Drag and James Harries, AKA CEO both broke jail and were rearrested when they the alleged (armed robbers) disclosed the names of top Police officers of alleged involvement in the act. But the 102 of the Liberia National Police Mulbah told FPA that the criminals would be speaking out trauma, saying, because they are in jail they can link anyone to buy sympathy from the public. He however called on the Liberian public to give the Police chance to investigate the matter
