“Being Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia is a temporary job; being citizen of Liberia is a permanent job. And I am prepared to give up the former any day; but never will I give up the letter. I was born a citizen of Liberia”, Dr. J. Mills Jones has noted. Delivering his oration at the 16th Special Commencement Program of the Stella Maris Polytechnic, the Executive Governor of CBL said it will be a serious mistake for any group to try to hide behind the constitution while trying to subvert that very constitution with half baked, cockeyed laws.

With wild applauds from the graduates, Dr. Jones propounded that all Liberians have equal rights under the constitution, stressing that trying to create second –class citizens of some because of fear of competition in the political arena will not stand.

Propounding further, Governor Jones said leadership is not about malicious manipulation, and that is what attempts to narrow the political space is, saying I speak here as a citizen of the Republic of Liberia, with equal concern for the future of my country as any other citizen and with equal protection under the constitution.

He continued: it is important to also emphasize that, the people have the right to celebrate anyone whom they consider to be working in their interest, and those who celebrate owe no one an apology; those who are celebrated owe no one an apology.

Speaking further, Dr. jones warned against the issue of political targeting with the aim of trying to exclude agent of change from the political space, pinpointing that “it is not acceptable that some in the political class, see new ideas for moving the country forward as a threat to their comfort zone, and therefore, reserve for themselves the right to do whatever they please to stop those ideas from going forward.

“We cannot say that those in job “X” have the right to think, talk, even if nonsensical, and act, even if not in the interest of the general good, while those in job “Y” should be ‘bobos’ and only add up members and speak only when they are spoken to and answer only when their name is called.”

In the case of CL. He said some say that the authorities there should only be concerned about macroeconomic stability but said, what is macroeconomic stability in the sea of poverty and underdevelopment?, he asked.

Speaking further, Dr. Jones said economic empowerment of Liberians-economic emancipation of the Liberian people at all levels of society—is an idea whose time has come.

Propounding, he said no amount of distortion coming from a few for selfish reasons will change this fact; and nothing will stop those with vision from planting the seed of hope called ‘economic empowerment’ doe the Liberian people.

“ There is no turning back, he added, stressing that if we as a people are to reach the cavalry of development and economic inclusion somebody must be prepared to carry the cross, saying that “ if the weight is too heavy, our hand shall be made strong by the power of the Almighty because our cause is just.

“My eyes have seen, my ears have heard; Liberians are hoping for a new day, and even if we don’t reap the benefit as individuals, our children and their children will know that there came a time in the history of Liberia when the people came to a conclusion that enough is enough; that it was a possible to reclaim the future of Liberia.
