The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) says the National Legislature will demonstrate seriousness in the fight against corruption when it grants the commission direct prosecutorial powers.

Addressing journalists recently in Monrovia, LACC Executive Chairman Cllr. James N. Verdier said granting the commission direct prosecutorial powers will remove delay barriers and fast track the fight against corruption.

Currently, the LACC waits for three months before beginning hearing into a corruption case it has submitted to the Justice Ministry. He noted that the situation is dampening the spirit and image of the commission, adding that something must be done to rectify the situation.

Cllr. Verdier noted that granting direct prosecutorial powers will be the creation of a specialized corruption or economic crimes court that will be devoted to the prosecution of corruption cases.

“We are working on a bill about these issues and we want both houses to quickly pass it as it will address existing issues of delay in prosecution among others,” Verdier emphasized.

Meanwhile, LACC Chairman has disclosed that he has recommended a hold on the payment of severance benefits to managers of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL).

Verdier indicated that the commission’s recommendation follows the commencement of an audit that is now striving to establish causes of the situation at the company. He noted that unless findings are derived, the commission will not support payment of any kind to any of the managers.
