Senator George Weah has told his critics that he is not on travel ban or sanctions list and that he has the right to freedom of movement and his work as a senator is not limited to the Capitol Building. He promised not to give his critics any relevance about why he left Liberia for more than a month because saying it was part of his legislative work. Senator Weah: “First of all I have a right to freedom of movement, I am not on the sanctions list or travel ban and my work is not limited to the senate. I have to travel for my county and for the Liberian people, so I don’t want to give relevance to critics because it is not important to me. I know my trip was a successful trip that will benefit my people”. The Montserrado County senator and political leader of the main opposition political party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) said, every time he travels out of Liberia it gives him the strength to pay a child school fees and do things beyond the limited budget for Montserrado County.
“I did it for my county, I have done it before and I feel it is the right thing to do, to go out and solicit, make friends and attract people to our senate by making friends to have a cohesive relationship with people out of Liberia to move our county and country forward,” Senator Weah said.
Speaking on the latest incident in the Paynesville area between the Police and motorcyclists he condemned the burning of the Police depot and the killing of a motorcyclist and stressed the need for unity between motorcyclists and the Police. According to him, he has already had discussions with the leadership of the Liberian National Police (LNP) and motorcyclists in an attempt to find an amicable solution to the problem.
Senator Weah said the Police are charged with the responsibility to maintain order and implement regulations, but stressed the need to give the motorcyclists the opportunity to gain their livelihood. “We all need to sit at the table with the Police and motorcyclists and make peace because unity between the both parties is important. On the other hand it is the only means the motorcyclists have to support their family and dependent”, said the Senator.
He added: “We cannot stop a citizen from getting their livelihood so if it will mean we regulate them so they can be in line with the law that will be good, but I equally don’t think burning and killing is the right thing especially after 15 years civil conflict”.
The Montserrado County Senator disclosed that during a meeting with the motorcyclists’ leadership Monday they expressed regret over the action of burning and destroying properties by their colleagues and condemned the action of their colleagues, but told him that most of the destruction done especially the burning of a Police depot was not their doing but that of detractors.
Senator Weah also disclosed that he has spoken with Police Director Chris Massaquoi of his plan to coordinate a meeting between the motorcyclists’ leadership and the Police and expressed optimism that he will see his effort as a good thing in the interest of peace. The Montserrado County senator warned Liberians, especially motorcyclists to respect the law because according to him it is the only way Liberians can build a good country respected by others.
