Government Breaks Ground For ELWA-RIA Highway

The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) Friday launched the ELWA –Roberts International Airport Highway Community Infrastructure Development Project (CIDP) in Monrovia. Speaking at the launching ceremony held at the ELWA Junction in the Monrovia suburb of Paynesville, CIDP Manager Henry K.Demawu said the CIDP is an implementationunit created within the Ministry of Public Works to improve land use activities with specific reference to the establishment and improvement of alleyways and drainages and communities along the ELWA-RIA highway.

Mr. Demawu said the project will help residents of the affected communities have easy access to their properties and the removal of structures constructed in alleyways and community roads along the ELWA-RIA highway.

He solicited the full cooperation of all community leaders, residents and youths residing in the communities along the ELWA-RIA highway, adding that the project will provide job opportunities for all unsealed community dwellers in the area.

The Minister of Public of Public Works, Mr. William Gyude Moore, has commended the government and people of Japan for providing a US $5.6 M grant to the Liberian Government through its Counterpart Value Fund.

He said the grant will enable the Government of Liberia to begin proper layout of communities along the ELWA-Roberts International Airport highway road corridor.

Speaking at the Public Works Ministry in Monrovia Friday, Mr.Moore said the project will include securing the right of way for the four-lane carriage from ELWA to RIA and opening of alleys and corridors within communities along this road corridor.

According to Mr. Moore, the project which will last for three years, will also include installation of sidewalks and planting of culverts.

The Public of Public Works Minister said the project will help residents of the affected communities have easy access to their respective properties, as well as facilitate the removal of structures constructed in alleyways and community roads along the ELWA-RIA highway.
