In the wake of his formal declaration to contest the senatorial seat as an Independent Candidate for Montserrado County, the question is can Mr. Robert Sirleaf, son of the current president Mrs. Ellen Johnson0Sirleaf win this year’s Senatorial race? Mr. Sirleaf mother, President Johnson-Sirleaf in 1986 General election won the senatorial seat for Montserrado but declined to take her seat in the legislature due to dissatisfaction with the than Samuel K. Doe’s regime.
He faces several other candidates. The former Chairman of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), Mr. Robert Allen Sirleaf, has accepted a petition to contest the Montserrado County senatorial seat in the October Mid-term election.Speaking at the petitioning ceremony in Monrovia Wednesday, Sirleaf promised to work to improve the living condition of citizens of Montserrado County when elected as their Senator.
He said the Montserrado County citizens petitioned him to represent them in the National Legislature because they are aware of his ability to meet their basic needs, especially in the areas of education, youth empowerment and community development.
Mr. Sirleaf said improvement of the road networks throughout the county remains a major challenge, and promised to ensure that as Senator the roads will be upgraded. In a two-page statement read at a well-attended program, Mr. Sirleaf, who is a son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said youth development in the county would be his paramount concern.
He pointed out that Liberian youths will be provided high speed internet and computers in the various communities to sharpen their minds and horizons. Mr. Sirleaf was also recently petitioned by a group calling itself “Montserrado Redemption Squad’’ to contest the Montserrado County Mid-term Senatorial Election.
In another development, the Maryland County branch of the former ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected Mr. Jammie Anderson, a prominent businessman, to contest the 2014 Mid-term Senatorial Election on the party’s ticket.
Mr. Anderson was elected on white ballot Sunday in Harper during the party’s primary. The businessman was earlier elected by the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) last month, defeating Representative Bhofal Chambers 28-4 votes during the CDC’s primary in Harper, Maryland County. That result was, however, overturned reportedly by the CDC election commission, making Chambers winner of the primary.
